Every guided day with The Speycaster is led by someone who knows these rivers intimately – the pools, the lies, the moods of the water through the seasons. Ian works alongside a small, trusted team of experienced local guides who share his approach: patient, knowledgeable, and passionate about salmon fishing in the North East of Scotland.
Whether you are picking up a double-handed rod for the first time or you have fished all your life, you will be in good hands.
Ian Neale – Salmon Fishing Guide & Spey Casting Instructor

Ian has worked professionally as a salmon fishing guide and Spey casting instructor since 1980, and spent five years as head guide on Russia’s celebrated Ponoi River. He guides on the River Findhorn, River Spey, River Dee and River Alness, and holds Spey casting tuition sessions for all levels. You can read more about Ian’s story on the About Ian Neale page.
David Johnstone – Nairnfly
David Johnstone of Nairnfly is an experienced salmon fishing guide who regularly guides Ian’s clients on the River Spey, including the Speymouth Angling Association water on the lower river. David’s local knowledge and easy manner make him a firm favourite with guests – recent clients Shane and Sholto McCausland enjoyed a memorable guided day with him at Speymouth, with Sholto hooking the first salmon of his life.
Ali – Ghillie & Fishing Guide
Ali is one of the trusted local guides Ian calls upon for guided salmon fishing days across Speyside and the North East. Experienced on the region’s rivers and burns, Ali brings the same patient, encouraging approach that defines every Speycaster guided day.
Photographs and fuller biographies for David and Ali will be added to this page shortly.
