A Beginner’s Triumph: Guiding Mark Hammond’s First Salmon Fly Fishing Adventure
As a seasoned fishing guide at Altyre Estate on the River Findhorn, I’ve had the pleasure of introducing many anglers to the art of salmon fly fishing. However, last week’s experience with Mark Hammond stands out as a particularly rewarding one.
Mark’s adventure began with a thoughtful birthday gift from his wife Gabby – a two-day salmon fly fishing experience purchased through our website, www.speycaster.net. As someone who had never tried salmon fly fishing before, Mark arrived eager to learn and full of enthusiasm.
From the moment we started, I could see Mark had a natural talent. He picked up the Spey casting technique remarkably quickly, and his determination was evident. On the very first day, his efforts paid off spectacularly. In the Palmore pool, Mark hooked and landed his first-ever salmon – a grilse weighing around 5 pounds. The look of joy and accomplishment on his face is why I love what I do.
The second day brought even more excitement. Heavy rainfall upstream had raised the river levels, creating perfect conditions for fresh summer salmon and grilse to run through our beats. Mark faced some challenges in the morning, hooking but losing four fish from our Upper beat. However, I’ve always found that perseverance is key in this sport, and Mark exemplified this perfectly.
In the afternoon, on the Lower beat’s Roan pool, Mark’s persistence was rewarded. He skillfully landed another fresh grilse, again around 5 pounds. This catch was a testament to how quickly he’d honed his skills and adapted to the river’s conditions.
What makes Altyre Estate such a special place for experiences like Mark’s is our exclusive setting. We offer over 2.5 miles of private fly fishing for up to 4 rods, split between our Upper and Lower beats. The breathtaking pools and easy access make it an ideal spot for both beginners like Mark and seasoned anglers looking for a challenge.
Mark’s success story is just one of many I’ve had the privilege to be a part of here at Altyre Estate. Whether it’s salmon or sea trout you’re after, our beats offer diverse fishing opportunities throughout the season.
If Mark’s story has inspired you to try your hand at salmon fly fishing, or if you’re an experienced angler looking for your next adventure, I’d be delighted to help. We still have availability for this season, and we’re already taking bookings for 2025.
